Captain and Chef Duo

Agustin and Simone Arrate

For the past 10 years, my wife Simone and I have shared an unforgettable adventure aboard the Huiaqui, our 16-meter-long ocean sailboat, our home. It all started in Brazil when we decided to set sail in search of new experiences and horizons. Our first destination took us to the Mediterranean, where the history, cultures and beauty of the European coasts welcomed us with open arms. Later we headed to the Caribbean where we crossed a marvel of human engineering, the Panama Canal, and entered the immensity of the Pacific. Twenty seven days later, paradise unfolded before our eyes, Polynesia. We continued sailing to the southern seas where sailing through these imposing waters near Antarctica is a reminder of how small human beings are. Then we arrived in New Zealand, land of the Maoris. After a while we sailed north to the land of volcanoes, Melanesia, which is full of magic and ancestral traditions. Finally, the Huaiqui took us to Asia, closing our cycle of exploration. What started as a dream turned into a shared life of memories and challenges.

My other lifetime experiences on the water include… Just in the last 10 years or so, 50,000 miles traveled which included two crossings of the Atlantic, Pacific and Asia. During my lifetime, how many miles travelled? I don’t know….. but this would include the charters I did in Brazil, the sailings in Patagonia aboard the Atlantis, the 7000 miles aboard the Negrito in the Paraná-Paraguay rivers, the countless crossings of the Rio de La Plata, Charters in the Mediterranean, my first trip aboard the Waikicha, my first boat, without a motor. I have cruised throughout Argentina-Panama. I did many deliveries of boats which included SV Ilina from Cartagena to San Andrés, SV Swan from Cartagena to Miami, MV Jacob from Palma de Mayorca to Puerto Santa Maria, and countless others. Just prior to my arrival in Spanish Wells in July 2024, we compiled approximately 1500 miles cruising around the Philippines.
